Trio of Leather-Works

A friend recently brought a British author to my attention. His name is Stephen Leather. Until hearing about his science fiction novel Dreamer's Cat, I had never heard of Stephen Leather. Now I've read three of his books, all on Kindle under the eBook format, naturally, and I thought I would take the opportunity to review these three stories here.

The first is Dreamer's Cat, since I read that first. If you have ever read any of Larry Niven's Known Space stories then you're familiar with the concept of being a wirehead, a person who has been fitted with an electronic brain implant to stimulate the pleasure centers of the person's brain. Stephen Leather has gone this concept a step further by creating a world where psi-discs are the most popular form of entertainment. People known as dreamers are hired to create the reality experienced within the psi-disc's embrace that has created a multi-billion dollar entertainment venue that puts the modern day craze of video gaming to shame. In this novel dreamers are dying or being killed while making their discs and another dreamer, the oldest among them, is chosen to discover why. This novel is filled with action, entertaining characterization and dialogue and enough sexual content to keep any youthful libido engaged throughout the length of the read. An excellent story.

In the second offering I read, Once Bitten, the author takes liberties with the vampiric mythos by introducing a psychologist who works for the Los Angeles Police Department. His job is to test recently apprehended suspects in order to decide whether they are sane or insane before going to trial. This role moves along fairly easily until the psychologist encounters a female brought in under suspicion of murder - with the victim's blood on her lips. Unfortunately the psychologist finds himself falling for this suspected murderer who may also be a suspected vampire - at least from his point of view. Learning the truth about her in every way may mean a complete disruption in this proper Englishman's life. A definite plus for those with an eye for the Gothic horror story. Leather treats this tale with enough imagination wrapping about the existent legends and tradition to spin a story well worth reading, regardless of the outcome.

In his third offering, The Basement, which was far too short for my tastes, but only because I wanted to continue reading when the story was nearing its ending, the author delves into the realm of crime drama by bringing us a story of a down-on-his-luck-would-be-writer living in New York City who becomes the prime suspect in a series of serial killings. The two detectives assigned to head up the task force searching for this killer, who has been abducting young women, begin looking at the erstwhile playwright, feeling as though he might fit the bill, seeing as how the profile on the unsub begins sounding more like him the deeper they dig. This story is well-written and like the previous two is very easy to follow with Leather's fluid approach to writing. The twists and turns in all his stories prove he has a frim grasp on how to conceive of, plot, and execute a beautifully scripted tale in any genre.

There is only one point I feel I must make that to some may be a detraction to Stephen Leather's writing - he seems not to be a proponent of the happy ending. Yes, I know, happy endings are a must for a perfect story - or are they? Leather certainly seems to feel otherwise and proves his point triply as he weaves his tales and brings each of these stories to a close quite efficiently and applaudingly satisfying and not one of them ends with a classically happy ending. The first one shocked me. The second one mystified me. The third one left me grumbling, "He must not have had a happy childhood". Regardless of the reason for Leather's penchant for ending his stories in the most twisted, wretched manner possible, he does so magnificnetly and leaves the reader with a sense of fulfillment and yearning for yet another of his treasures.

Let's see - what's the next book on his list..?

Dangerous Times

Throughout the plots of novels, movies, television shows and even plays, the underlying theme is often either revenge or an attempt to move oneself forward in a manner that requires cheating and or killing others. In his first crime novel, Dangerous Times, new author Phillip Frey uses both and uses them well.

Frank Moore is an underworld figure who has a penchant for murdering women and children. None of his killings have been for monetary gain or revenge; Frank Moore simply enjoys killing innocents who, for whatever reason, appeal to his lack of morals. He is also a bag man for a powerful Asian crime boss. Now he's become tired of carrying someone else's money and has decided to steal it, making his getaway by locating the perfect patsy in the form of one John Kirk, a near-enough look-a-like that once he has killed Kirk, Moore can stage the death so those who come looking for the millions of dollars he has stolen from his employer will believe the body to be that of the former bag man.

Moore, however, is unprepared for the twists and turns of fate that are present in the life of this former Marine, now a troubled San Pedro, California auto mechanic. Twists and turns that will throw Moore's carefully crafted plan into upheaval, threatening to undo everything he and his lovely wife, his Asian employer's niece, who wants her uncle's money as partial payment for murdering her parents years back, have carefully conceived.

In this debut novel for Phillip Frey, a story that is not without a few minor annoyances that reveal the author's lack of credentials, you might find the beginning of the story a little rough, but Frey quickly finds his groove and the majority of the story unveils itself as a compelling plot that grips hold of your imagination and urges you to keep reading until the last page is reached.

This story indeed has its intermittent errors in grammar that need to be cleaned up, but none of them are enough to detract from a story that is as imaginative as it is fulfilling.

Phillip Frey proves with Dangerous Times that he can deliver a tightly written page-turner that will leave you waiting for the sequel. Indeed, the way in which this author completes this novel promises that there will be a second story to follow up on the characters Frey has created. I hope he doesn't wait too long on writing it.

Dangerspouse Blogger

Do you, like thousands upon thousands of other people around this mudball we call the planet Earth have a blog? If you do, most likely you post odd little tidbits that come to mind, things you feel are interesting to you in the hopes that other people might be interested in them as well. Some people are right on this count and other people are interested in what gets put into any given blog. Most, however, are incorrect and the daily doses of "little Johnny or Jenny" posted are enough to make most of us gag and wretch and begin to barf up whatever might reside within our stomachs.

Not so with one specific blogger who posts under the name of Dangerspouse and calls his life-mate NewWifey(tm). This particular posting of blog stories is to say the least - hilariously funny. From purple dinosaurs to Irish stew to bear cubs that steal golf clubs, the ramblings of Dangerspouse (whose real name I have yet to learn) are irrevocably and incessantly funny enough to make each new reader return to read more and more of these postings - only to find this online author does not post often enough.

**SIGH** Yes, that is the only problem and complaint I have with with this blogger site - Dangerspouse does not add new posts nearly often enough to suit me. Once you have read everything in his copious backlog of story-snippets, you realize there isn't anything more - anything new - and when was the latest entry written?? That long ago? Why the HELL hasn't he returned to add another new post so I can get my rather-larger-than-I-prefer gut jiggling like that proverbial bowl full of Jell-O until my sides ache and tears are silently streaming down my cheeks?

If, for a limited time, as with any other reader of an author of fine writing, you want to sit back and enjoy your day while someone else does the work of making you laugh, check out the blog from Dangerspouse. ***WARNING*** Reading this blog may cause excitability along with feral sounds that emit unexpectedly and uncontrollably from deep within your diaphragm. Make certain your health insurance premiums are up-to-date before venturing forth and beginning to read this blog.

***DISCLAIMER*** We here at Crescent Suns e-Books are not and cannot be held responsible for any pain or physical misalignment caused by eruptive joviality. If you persist in reading the blog by Dangerspouse you do so on your own and without having been coerced by anyone else.

Enjoy. I do.
